Commercial oil presses are not sold at published list prices, and two quotes for the same rated capacity are rarely comparable. What separates them is the pressing method, how much of the surrounding line is included, and which figures the manufacturer publishes at all. This guide covers the specifications to fix before requesting a quote, why a batch press and a continuous press rated at the same kg/h are not equivalent machines, how a production line is assembled around the press, and why the phrase "cold pressed" is not a purchasing specification.
If you are sizing a commercial oil press for the first time, the difficult part is not choosing a machine. It is making two quotes comparable. Our Twin-pod hydraulic press and our 30 kg Cold Press carry the same hourly rating, and one weighs 950 kg against the other's 350 kg. Everything below is drawn from figures published on our product pages, so you can check any number against its source rather than taking a summary on trust.
What to verify before requesting a quote
Industrial oil presses are quoted per enquiry rather than listed at a price, and search results for a commercial oil press mix new machines, used units and low-cost imports on a single page. Before any figure means anything, four specifications have to be settled.
Two of them are about the machine. The pressing method determines the operating pattern, since batch hydraulic pressing and continuous pressing are different machines rather than different sizes of the same one. Rated capacity has to be stated against a named feedstock, because a rating for roasted sesame does not transfer to raw perilla seed. The other two are about the quotation itself. Automation level changes what an operator has to do at each cycle. Line scope — destoning, washing, roasting, cooling, conveying, filtering — can sit inside or outside the quoted figure, and a quotation that excludes those stages will always appear cheaper than one that includes them.
Three costs then accumulate outside the quoted figure entirely. Power consumption runs for every hour the machine operates. Weight determines transport, site access and floor loading. Parts availability determines how long the line stands still when something fails, which over the life of a production machine is usually the largest of the three.

The clearest way to see the difference is to compare the two machines rated at 30 kg/h. The Twin-pod hydraulic press reaches that rating in cycles of 6 kg, drawing 2.9 kW and weighing 950 kg. The Cold Press 30kg reaches the same rating on a continuous hopper feed, drawing 7.3 kW and weighing 350 kg. One is heavy and electrically modest; the other is light and draws more than twice the power. A quotation that lists only "30 kg/h" has told you almost nothing about which of these you are buying.
The two methods also run out of range at different points. On the hydraulic side, 30 kg/h is the highest rating we publish. The continuous range continues to 100 kg/h, and above 30 kg/h there is no published hydraulic equivalent — so at higher volumes the practical comparison is between several batch machines running in parallel and one larger continuous machine, which differ in floor area, operator count and total connected load rather than in rated output.
Feedstock belongs to the rating rather than to its footnotes. The same 100 kg machine is published at 100 kg/h for roasted sesame and 80 kg/h for raw perilla seed. Sizing against the wrong feedstock is the most common way a correctly specified machine turns out to be undersized once it is running. Line setup: cleaning, roasting, cooling, pressing, filtering
A press on its own is not a production line. Equipment sits on both sides of it, and which stages you install determines product consistency and how much of the work stays manual. Our installation records list machines leaving as combinations rather than singly — a Cold Press 100kg shipped for export alongside a large roaster, a vacuum conveyor and a hot-air washer, which is a line rather than a machine.

Cooling is the stage most often left out of a first-pass line design, and it is a process requirement rather than an upgrade. Our operating instructions recommend roasting sesame at or below 170°C, and roasted seed then has to come down below 70°C before it is pressed; feeding uncooled material into the press risks damaging the seed barrel. Those two figures define the window the cooling equipment exists to bridge, which is why a roasting line without a cooling stage is not finished.
Settling capacity is sized last rather than first. Tanks run from 100 L to 1,000 L, so the order that works is to fix hourly throughput, derive daily output from operating hours, then select tank capacity against that figure. Sizing tanks before throughput is settled tends to produce a line that either idles or backs up at the filtering stage.
Why "cold pressed" is not a purchasing specification
"Cold pressed" appears on nearly every machine listing in this category, including ours — our continuous range is named for the method. On its own the phrase establishes very little, and the reason is that no single technical definition of it applies to seed oils.
The Codex Alimentarius standard for named vegetable oils, CXS 210-1999, describes cold pressed oils in qualitative terms and attaches no temperature figure to them. The European Union does set a numeric threshold, 27°C, for "first cold pressing" and "cold extraction" — but that sits in its olive oil marketing standards under Delegated Regulation (EU) 2022/2104 and governs olive oil labeling, not sesame, perilla or other seed oils. In the United States there is no equivalent definition for seed oils at all. A buyer comparing two machines therefore has no shared benchmark the phrase could be measured against.
There is a physical point underneath the terminology as well. Mechanical pressing generates heat through friction whether or not a press is externally heated, and presses in this category are commonly preheated before a run: ours are, and our published operating conditions say so. That matters for polyunsaturated oils in particular, since fatty acids carrying multiple double bonds are chemically more susceptible to oxidation from heat, oxygen and light than saturated or monounsaturated ones. Pressing temperature is a real variable — which is precisely why it deserves a number rather than an adjective.
So the useful question is not whether a listing says "cold pressed". It is whether the manufacturer publishes the temperatures at which the machine actually runs. For our cold press range we publish both: a machine temperature of 70–80°C and a resulting oil temperature of 50–55°C. Those are operating figures rather than a claim of compliance with any particular standard, and they are on the product pages where they can be checked and held to. A listing that offers the adjective and no figures has given you nothing to verify.
